What is Hyper-Vigilance Fatigue?
Hypervigilance fatigue is a constant state of alertness. It is often linked to anxiety or unresolved traumas. When you are always “on guard”—due to stress, past trauma, or anxiety—your body and mind feel worn out. This fatigue can sneak up on you, draining your energy even when there seems to be no threat.
Recognizing Hyper-Vigilance Fatigue
Last year, I worked with a patient who had frequent panic attacks. She was exhausted all the time. We tried different treatments to support her physical health. Although her energy improved a bit, the fatigue persisted. Finally, we discovered an unresolved trauma causing her hypervigilance fatigue. Once we addressed that trauma, her panic attacks stopped, and her energy returned.
Trauma does not always impact us right away. It can resurface years or even decades later. For instance, something might happen when you are five, but its effects may not appear until you are 30. At that point, you may feel sudden, unexplained exhaustion. This is often a sign that your body and mind are ready to process and release long-held trauma.
How to Heal from Hyper-Vigilance Fatigue
The good news is that there are effective ways to manage hypervigilance fatigue and its underlying trauma. Here are a few methods I often recommend:
- Brainspotting: This technique involves working with a trained psychologist or therapist. They help you process trauma by focusing on specific eye positions. This approach can access and release deeply held emotional pain, enabling you to move forward.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): Similar to brainspotting, EMDR uses guided eye movements. This helps the brain process and heal from distressing memories. It is a well-known and effective therapy for trauma.
- Naturopathic Tools: If you see a naturopathic doctor, they may recommend herbal remedies or relaxation techniques. They might also use advanced therapies to help release trauma and support emotional healing.
Addressing hypervigilance fatigue can also improve your physical health. If left untreated, it can weaken your immune system, disrupt sleep, and lead to other health issues. By resolving this fatigue, you not only boost your energy but also protect your overall well-being.
Reclaiming Your Energy and Peace of Mind
Hyper-vigilance fatigue is challenging, but recovery is possible. If this resonates with you, consider reaching out to a therapist, psychologist, or naturopathic doctor for support. With the right tools and guidance, you can overcome emotional exhaustion and start feeling more energized and balanced.
